Our Take on Halloween

Thursday I had a couple of girls from our youth group over to help make candy apples and clean out 6 large pumpkins for the costume party our youth group hosted on Friday night.

One was our new pastors daughter and the two good friends of Amy's. It was fun watching them all giggle, joke around and enjoy themselves. We made 4 dozen candy apples in orange, red and purple. Then the girls cleaned out 6 large pumpkins so that Pastor Paul and Jay could carve them later. Here are a few pics from the afternoon and evening.

Last night our youth group hosted a costume party for the little ones of our church and then after that they had their own costume party.

Everyone came dressed up and I mean everyone!

What a blast. We had ten little ones show up in costume with their parents who were in costume as well. There were games, activities, stories, treats and lots of visiting. Our dear friend Kevin came as a bag of Jelly Beans lol.

Near the end of the children's party we played a game called "Pop the Pastor" and the little ones took tiny push pins and popped all Kev's balloons. Imagine the giggles and laughter as these little munchkins popped the balloons and little bags of jelly beans fell out. Very fun and very cute. Thanks Kev for such a great idea!

There was a donut eating contest where they had to eat a donut hanging from a string while keeping their hands tied behind their backs. My son, Simon, won that little contest and received to his delight a handful of caramels to add to his growing collection of treats. A friends little girl came in second a minute or so after. It was so funny, I stood beside her to help her eat her donut by allowing her to press the donut against my side. I wish I had a picture of it, but my hands were kinda full at the time :) I knew there was a reason for my belly lol.

This is a picture of Jay with our good friend Jeanette. She came as a ditzy blonde valley girl type. Very authentic and she even acted the part to a T.

Some of the girls in our youth group and the youth leader, Richard. Notice the distance they are standing from Richard and more noticeably the expression on Katie's face at the far right? These girls DO NOT like clowns. Poor Richard, he wasn't very popular with those of us who have clown issues LOL.

After the childrens party was over we progressed from kiddy bible songs to teen Christian music and games. Lots of laughter, running around and good clean fun. We played a few games including the donut game. Around 9pm they started watching the movie, The Village. Some of the boys had fun scaring the girls and I especially got a kick out of the fact that I scared one of the boys by accident. I was just walking behind him and he saw my shadow. WOW, did he jump. So funny especially since this isn't even really a scary movie!

After a pizza intermission we finished the movie and then had everyone draw a number for a gift. The local Christian radio station, UCB 102.3 had donated a bunch of cd's, a t-shirt and a game for the teens. Each teen received a gift. Again thank you Kevin!

After cleaning up the downstairs, I got home at 12:15am. Bed at 1am. Sleep after 2:30am. Woke up at 4am to Amy. She had two friends sleepover and the one who was sharing her bed, Emily, pushed her out of bed! Too funny. So Amy went looking for somewhere else to sleep. Ended up sleeping in our bed with her head at the foot and her feet at the head (it works somewhat when you have 3 adult size people). Of course I only dozed from that point on until 7:30am when I gave up and got up to make coffee.

It's 10:12pm and I'm still going. Must get some sleep soon. We have church in the morning. At least we get to turn back the clocks and gain another hour of sleep.

Another thing:

Jay leaves tomorrow afternoon for Brampton for a week of training in his new position with Lowes. Very excited for him. He is finally getting out of the construction trade and going to be working indoors with BENEFITS! Woohoo! This is a big change for him and he's really looking forward to all the new possibilities.

So I can't go to bed yet. I still have to cut Jays hair and help him finish his packing. Oh well, I'll go to bed early tomorrow night and maybe sleep in Monday. One of the perks of homeschooling? Sleeping in occasionally just means working on lessons a little later in the day. I think we all need a little sleep in.

Well that bites...

I took this quiz to see what bible character I most resembled...not very happy with what I got. Maybe I need to rethink the way I behave and believe? hmmm

But apparently I have lots of company ;)

Thanksgiving 2008

I'm a bad blogger. Remembered to take my camera to our family thanksgiving but forgot to take it out of my purse until it was practically over!

There were 27 people at my sister-in-laws place to celebrate together and I don't have any decent pics to show for it.

Lots of food, TONS of desserts and plenty of laughs. There is always a lot of silly laughter and shenanigans going on at our family gatherings. However, not this time. Weirdly everyone was rather well behaved. So, I don't have any funny stories to share this year. Bummer.

Hmmm, can't leave a post with no pictures, so I share the few I did take and a little info about each one.

We started off the day going to my favourite apple orchard again! 3x's this year! Everyone was so impressed, even my sister Ginny, that we are going to go there from now on.

Now, I know I've been promoting Barb's orchard here on my blog and some of you may start becoming a little suspicious, but truly and honestly, she's not paying me a cent for this lol.

Welcome to my favourite apple orchard :)

Later on that day, my kid brother showed up with his fiancee and baby girl. These are just some pics of Isabella another miracle baby in our family, she so tiny but growing beautifully. Bella will be 1 on November 27th.

Amy's First Photo Shoot

Oh wow! I am such a proud momma today. My dear friend Jeanette stopped by this morning with an awesome gift for us.

Last Saturday we went to watch Amy's good friend Katie get her blue belt in karate. While there, Katie's dad, Michael, was taking pictures of the event. Amy was supposed to originally go to their place in the afternoon for a photo shoot with Michael, who by the way is a fantastic amateur photographer. Since we were already there Michael wanted to try some shots with Amy.

These are some of the shots. To see all of them you can view our public web album here.

RECIPE & Herbs : We had frost last night...

Thank goodness I brought in my herbs.

I decided yesterday to take the last of the herbs in for drying. Amy and I hung them up in the kitchen/classroom window.

The house smells divine and it's really nice to see all these little bundles just hanging around. I've asked hubby to make me a rack for the kitchen ceiling for next year. I'd like to hang my pots from it and it would be perfect to hang the herbs next year.

I think I'll take all the sweet and greek basil and make pesto to freeze for the winter. I love this recipe.

Basil Pesto

1/2 pine nuts, toasted
1 cup packed basil
1 cup packed flat leaf parsley
1- 2 cloves garlic (to your taste)
Ground black pepper
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup Parmigiano Reggiano cheese
1/2 tsp lemon juice (if freezing to prevent discolourization)

Add the basil, parsley, garlic, salt and pepper to food processor. Pulse until finely chopped. Stream in 1/2 cup EV olive oil and pine nuts, pulse until combined, transfer into a large mixing bowl and stir in the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

Since I'm going to make a big batch for freezing, I will omit the cheese and just add it in when I'm ready to use it. I find the cheese doesn't take to well to freezing and thawing.

I freeze my pesto in small ziploc bags, pressed flat for easy storage in the freezer. I also make a batch or two in ice cube trays for when I just want a small amount for a recipe or meal.

Happy Sunday

What a great day!

Our new pastor started today and what a service! I am beginning to feel the stirring of optimism but trying to keep my expectations down :)

I will write more about our pastor later, perhaps, but for now let me show you some pictures of our afternoon after the service.

Our family plus two other families from our chuch took the new pastor and his family apple picking at my favourite apple orchard (see this post).

A good time was had by all and lots of apples got picked and eaten along the way :)
